Street Scene Scuffle

By Julie

I've been so mesmerized by this 'controversy' that I really wanted to bring it up on B&B to hear your thoughts. In short, Scott Shuman, the mastermind behind the impeccably chic street-style blog, The Sartorialist, threw readers into a tizzy when he used the word 'curvy' to describe the young blogger photographed below.

In my humble opinion, I think she is absolutely adorable and perhaps buxom a la Christine Hendricks or Kim Kardashian. I mean, really, does it get any better than that?! Readers expressed that he should have used the word 'normal' instead of 'curvy'. Honestly, I think 'normal' is even more insulting. Who wants to be described as average or typical? We can't quite see it in these pictures, but in his post he explains that she is, in fact, busty and much more full-figured than most of the typical street style bloggers and models that he normally sees.

On the streets of New York City and working in the fashion industry, in particular, it's easy to get caught up in the stigma of thinness as power, but I think that these pictures and labeling her as 'curvy' is empowering and proves just the opposite. Scott Shuman aptly captures that beauty, fashion, grace and elegance come in all different shapes, sizes and ages. I can only hope that this young girl walks with all the confidence that she deserves.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

What to Wear Where- When it's Freezing!

By Lauren

With yet another week of freezing temps in New York, I needed to change up my jacket routine to something that I haven't been lugging around for the past 5 months. I pulled out my favorite fur collar Michael Kors collection coat that I got at a sample sale when I was working there. Seriously, one of the best finds ever!

And since it's What to Wear Where Wednesday here at B&B, I thought I would give you a list of my top 3 fur collar worthy restaurants all with a cozy atmosphere and delicious food that I'm dying to go to before summer gets here...if ever!

Please note that though I am definitely pale from this long winter, I don't look like the black swan in real life, this was the result of a bad camera flash!

Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend

By Julie

Don't panic. No credit cards are necessary, but these pieces are just too exquisite to ignore!

There's an amazing Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition currently at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City. The exhibition showcases the masterpieces through six different themes which represent the history of the Parisian based jewelry house.

Innovation

Van Cleef & Arpels created the 'mystery setting', which results in a finished piece with no obvious determination of what is holding the gems to its setting.

Transformation

What woman wouldn't want a piece of jewelry that can be worn many different ways?
All the pieces of this collection are uniquely versatile: the wings come off to form earrings, the tail comes off to form a brooch, and the pendant can be detached and worn independently.

1938 Zip Necklace with Extension

Nature

In this part of the exhibit you will find pieces inspired from birds, flowers, trees, insects, animals and feathers.

The Kikumakie Butterfly brooch combines ancient Japanese lacquering techniques

Exoticism

The Van Cleef & Arpels designs did not only appeal to people in the U.S. and Europe in the 1920s. The brand was soon influenced by its growing clientele in exotic places like India, Egypt and China.

The themes and colors in this piece originated in the wall paintings and other parts of the excavations of King Tut's tomb in 1922

Fashion

Van Cleef & Arpels was also always coveted for more than just their fine jewelry; their accessories were sought after especially their evening clutches collection or Minaudieres. The clutches were just large enough to fit a lady's compact, lipstick, cigarettes and money. No cellphones though!

The bow is a traditional symbol of the ties that bind a love, and a garment

Personalities

The list of names that wore the jewels and accessories designed by Van Cleef & Arpels is a who's who list of timeless trend-setters including Princess Grace of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor and many, many more.

These sapphire pendant earrings were worn by Elizabeth Taylor in 1985

Whether you're in NY to attend the exhibit or not, any lady can appreciate these jewels! I love to hear the history behind all of these one-of-a-kind pieces and wanted to make sure to share some of my favorites with all of you.
Stunning!

Dining by Design

By Lauren

Last week was the annual Dining by Design event at Pier 94, where decorators and brands alike came together to create incredible table settings within intricately decorated booths to help support AIDS research. My mother and I went to see what all the fuss was about, and it turns out we began to fuss as well! Everything was so beautiful and creative. Better yet, we got some great ideas for our Passover table. Take a look at some of my favorites and get inspired, too.

There are so many little details that I love from each table, I can't choose my favorite. What's yours?

Spring Forward

By Julie

It's Friday!

Don't worry, I don't actually take myself this seriously! Just a moment.

Aaaand I'm back!
Dress: Zara, Jacket: Topshop, Handbag: Bottega Veneta, Tights: Hue, Shoes: Julian Louie

The weather has been crazy all week so I wasn't quite ready to dive head first into the neon color-blocking trend for spring. I toned my look down with opaque tights and the muted colors from my Julian Louis wedges (are you sick of seeing them yet?!).

Lauren and I have some pretty exciting news to share with you all soon so make sure to tune in next week...

Who's ready for the weekend? Any fun plans?
Xx.

Fashion Legacy: Elizabeth Taylor

Yesterday we lost one of the world’s greatest fashion icons, Elizabeth Taylor. Famed for her Oscar wins, incredible charity work as well as her passionate love affairs with some of Hollywood’s greatest, we're inspired by her remarkable beauty and timeless fashions. Elizabeth Taylor’s passing is a great loss, but her legacy will live on for decades to come.

Imitation is the ultimate form of flattery.

Bring on the Bow Tie

By Lauren

So my new catch-phrase is "Do you think I should wear my bow tie to the supermarket?" I swap supermarket for various random informal locations and crack myself and my boyfriend up every time...because as absurd as it sounds, of course the answer is "Duh, Yes!"

The bow tie I am referring to is my new purchase from Brooklyn based boutique, Life:Curated. It is a leather bow tie attached to a necklace that surprisingly matches everything I own! This past Saturday I wore it with my favorite vintage purchase, black Seven jeans, and my Miu Miu studded sandals.

Any thoughts on where I should wear my bow tie next so that my joke doesn't get old?

D.I.Y - Napkin Folding Like a 5 Star Restaurant

By Lauren

Last week, as I was helping the New York Design Center set up their booth for the Dining by Design event at Pier 94, I learned the most unnecessary/definitely necessary little trick: How to fold a napkin like a pro! I must admit I never knew how intricate folding napkins could be, but learning this little trick will brighten up the table of all those dinner parties I wasn't able to throw...until now!

Start with a square napkin in any fabric or color...as you can see here, I'm super excited about my hot pink one.

Lay it out flat and start folding the corners in so that the points meet in the middle, making 4 triangles and a new square.

Then take the new corners and repeat this technique of folding them into triangles whose points meet in the middle.

Gently flip the entire smaller square over so that you have a new blank canvas, so to speak.

Now start the same technique all over again, folding the corners to meet in the middle. This time there will be the folds from your last triangle creations appearing on the top. Fold all 4 corners making sure to use one had to hold them all down and the other hand to smooth out sharp corners and creases.

With both hands, secure all your insane folding so that nothing breaks lose while you place it on your top plate.

From underneath each corner of this little square, you will pull the top layer of fabric out so that it looks like the petal of a flower. Pull it sharp and tight while your other hand holds the folds in place so that you don't pull the whole thing apart. Repeat 4 times on all corners.

Then in the middle of each side of the square will be a corner that you can just lightly pull out to reveal the leaves of this beautiful rose.

Place something in the middle, like a place card, or a flower, and your napkin folding extravaganza is complete.

Get excited, you just created the coolest looking napkin ever, and for someone who never understood origami in grade school, this was quite an accomplishment!
